The Rotary Club of Ukiah did a great new event this June. We did an organized bicycle ride as a fundraiser. There were 3 rides of different lengths, the longest one going from Mendocino College near Ukiah and heading all the way to the coast and back. Here's the website address for more information: Mendocino Monster

Our event was a great success, and we're planning on repeating it and making it even better next year!

Rotary Club of Ukiah
Youth Community Service Awards

Presented on May 12, 2009 at our weekly Rotary Club meeting.

The purpose of this program is to recognize youth who give of themselves in service to their community for which they receive no pay, no school credit and are otherwise not required to perform. This is the fourteenth year that we have presented these awards. Applications were sent out to all of our local public and private schools. The students were selected by their teachers and principals and applications were forwarded to the Rotary Club. The Rotary Club of Ukiah is rewarding these students with a gift of a savings bond. Today we have 3 elementary school students who will receive a $75.00 savings bond, 5 middle school student who will receive a $100.00 savings bond, and 4 high school students who will each receive a $200.00 savings bond.

Keelie Stutsman

11 years old, Oak Manor Elementary School,         Principal: David Warken

Keelie volunteers for the trail program at the Ridgewood Ranch which is a horseback ride for disabled children. This is a program that helps disabled children build self esteem through learning to ride and care for the horses. Keelie was introduced to this program through her 4-H program and then has continued the project on her own.

Mayra Corona

12 years old, Frank Zeek Elementary School,            Principal: Barbara Boyer

Mayra volunteers at the Animal Shelter walking dogs, bathing dogs, taking dogs out to the playpens where they can run and play. She also keeps the cats occupied by playing with them and cuddling with them.

This benefits the dogs and cats at the shelter because instead of them being bored in their cages, they are allowed to walk and be socialized. This helps the animals to be more adoptable.

Mayra enjoys spending time with the animals and volunteers here time at the Animal Shelter.

Adrianna Dennett

11 years old, Redwood Valley Elementary School,    Principal: Christina Burrell

Adrianna has been a weekly volunteer at the Humane Society for the past three years. During the summers she works there on an almost daily basis.

Not only does Adrianna provide an invaluable service to the animals and staff, but she helps raise the consciousness of classmates and peers about the responsibilities of owning pets and the importance or preserving habitats for wildlife.

Mario & Marcos Sanchez

Potter Valley Jr. High School,         Principal: Scott Paulin

Mario & Marcos are brothers who both volunteer their time doing computer repair at school, working on an online technology course and doing the Potter Valley Friday’s Game Night fundraising yearbook event. They both help with repair and the regular maintenance of their school’s computers and other electronic equipment.

Since they both work together on a lot of the same activities, their teachers couldn’t decide who to select for our award, so we agreed to reward them both.

Zachary Rouse

13 years old -  Tree of Life Montessori Charter School,     Principal: Celeste Beck

Zachary donates his time 3 days a week to help teach children of all ages Karate & self defense at Maldonado Kenpo Karate. Zachary’s teaching helps children of all ages to gain confidence and structure in their daily lives. He has become a mentor and role model for some kids that don’t have one. He has trained for 9 years to be a Black Belt in Kenpo Karate and got involved by volunteering to help his instructor teach others.

Megan Smith

12 years old - Pomolita Middle School,         Principal: Diana Marshall

Megan has volunteered at Mendocino Care and Control for one year. She walks dogs, makes kennel cards that have a photo of the dog and includes information about the dog’s breed, age and their behaviors. She also helps evaluate dogs to see if they are adoptable.

Volunteering as Megan does, saves the lives of hundreds of cats & dogs each year. It also helps people find a pet that brings happiness to them.

Megan says, “I used to go visit Mendocino Care and Control and I saw an application to start volunteering. I finally decided to volunteer and I’m really glad that I am doing this. I plan to continue on.”

Jeannie Lee

14 years old - Developing Virtue Secondary School,         Principal: Heng Yin

Jeannie is involved in a project called Books of Hope. Books of Hope helps former child soldiers in Uganda learn, read and maybe even write. It shows them that there is more than blood, war and death in the world, and – as the project is named – it gives them hope in a better future and life.

Jeannie got involved in this project because last year she participated in the Invisible Children Foundation where she found out about these children and their problems. This year her teachers and school helped her get involved in the Books of Hope project.

Loyda Soto

14 years old, Redwood Academy of Ukiah,             Principal: Elna Gordon

Loyda volunteers at the Ukiah Animal Shelter. She has been volunteering for over one year. She helps walk the dogs, trains them and gives them attention. She helps out doing whatever the shelter asks her to do.

Loyda got involved because she made a New Year’s resolution to help out more and decided to volunteer last year.

Cara Lin

17 years old - Developing Virtue Secondary School,         Principal: Heng Yin

Cara is involved in a service project in Mexico. She and other students have volunteered to spend several days in a small city just across the border in Mexico. They will help repair homes for the poor. Cara expects to not only repair homes but hopes that her group and the villagers will gain an understanding of the beauty of each other’s culture through music, food, art and language.

Cara and the other students have raised $1700.00 so far for this project.

Lezlie Elmer

18 years old - Potter Valley High School,             Principal: Scott Paulin

Lezlie has done two main service projects.

The first project is cleaning up the Potter Valley cemetery for the upcoming Memorial Day service. A special part of the Memorial Day service will include a tribute to those community members who have died in a war. Lezlie is also helping to raise fund for ongoing maintenance and landscaping at the cemetery.

The second project is participating in the Relay for Life. Lezlie has been active in coordinating the Mendocino County Relay for Life event. She was a team captain and organized different activities during the event. She has been able to get youth in Potter Valley to be more aware of cancer and support local families of cancer victims by teaching cancer awareness at her 4-H Club. As an individual, she raised $3500.00 for the Relay for Life.

Savanna Warren

17 years old - South Valley High School,             Principal: Antonio Lopez

Savanna signed up for In Home Health Services and decided to volunteer to help take care of a friend of her Mom’s who was dying. She cooked and cleaned for her, to make things easier, so she could just rest.

Savanna says, “She was getting sicker, so I decided to help.”

The GSE Team from Brazil is visiting Ukiah this week. We will have a BBQ for them on Sunday May 17th at 5:30 PM at Dunnewood Vineyards. The whole group will be our program this Tuesday at our regular Rotary Club meeting. Here are the members:

Team Leader – Simone Araujo

Simone is a member of the Rotary Club of Sete Lagoas – Boa Vista, and is the immediate Past President (07-08).  Simone is a law school graduate (1994), and is a practitioner-owner of Neurolinguistics.  With that training, she is the owner/manager of a foreign language school, “Wizard Sete Lagoas”, part of a 1,300 branch franchise.  Simone would very much like to visit other language schools, any organizations comparable to the “Lighthouse Project”, and any schools that specialize in students that are “lagging behind”.

Bruno Lanna

Bruno is a graduate civil engineer, with additional training in information systems and project management.  He’s now working for Accenture, and is currently on a project for the largest Brazilian telecom company.

Paula Soares Correa

Paula is a student of journalism and communications and an English language tutor (including cultural, social, economic and political background of the U.S. in her teaching).  She is the marketing manager for a Honda franchise and directs her attention to the general public as well as employees.

Danubia Lopes

Danubia is with the Brazilian Military Police and is very involved with PROERD (Programa Educacioanal de Resistencia as Drogas), modeled after the DARE program begun in Los Angeles, California.  She is interested in programs that combat drug abuse through education.

Leonardo Vale

Leonardo is a Production/Industrial Engineer with ArcelorMittal (the world’s largest steel company).  His work involves quality, logistics and production improvement.  He is also teaching a college course in Operational Research.  Leonardo is very interested in the higher education system of California (state and private colleges and universities) as well as our technology companies and the film industry.

Vanessa Karam

Vanessa is a graduate architect and designer and owns her own firm.  She involves herself totally in her projects.  She likes to be involved, as she puts it, “from the empty lot to the last knob installed”.  Vanessa would like to visit architects as well as schools of design and see projects that serve the communities.

Both the Rotary Club of Ukiah and the South Ukiah Rotary Club helped out with the Granite Construction Chili Cook-Off fundraiser event in September that benefited the Boys & Girls Club of Ukiah.

The Boys & Girls Club of Ukiah invited a group of representatives from the various groups that helped with the Chili Cook-Off for the presentation of a check for $22,594.54 from Granite Construction to the Ukiah Boys & Girls Club for the proceeds of the Chili Cook-Off held in September.  Present from the Rotary Club of Ukiah were John Graff & George Phelan.

The Director of the Boys & Girls Club repeatedly thanked both clubs for their participation, and said that they couldn't raise this money without the great support from Rotary and the community.
